Audi brake service in Elk Grove

Pads, rotors, fluid and the electronic parking brake, serviced to Audi specification with genuine Audi parts.

Is it safe to keep driving on it?

That depends on what you are hearing and feeling, so here is the honest version.

  • A brake pad warning light on the dash. Audi fits wear sensors to the pads. When the light comes on, the pads are near the end of their life. Book the visit this week, not this season.
  • A red brake warning or a low fluid message. Stop driving and call us. That is a hydraulic or fluid-level problem, not a wear item.
  • Squeal on light braking. Often dust or glazing, sometimes the pad backing plate talking. Worth an inspection, rarely an emergency.
  • Grinding. Metal on metal. The pads are gone and the rotors are being cut. Every mile adds to the bill.
  • A pulsing pedal or a shimmy through the wheel under braking. Uneven rotor thickness or deposits on the rotor face. It will not fix itself.
  • A soft or long pedal. Air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak. Get it looked at before the next freeway trip.

What wears, and what we replace

Pads

The friction material that clamps the rotor. Audi pads are matched to the car's weight, rotor size and brake balance, which is why the genuine part stops the way the car was engineered to stop.

Rotors

Audi rotors are sized with limited margin for resurfacing. When a rotor wears below its minimum thickness, it is replaced, not machined. We measure and show you the number.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and invites corrosion inside the system. Audi's maintenance schedule calls for brake fluid replacement on a time basis, not a mileage basis, and it is one of the items most often skipped.

Calipers and hardware

Slide pins, clips and caliper seals keep the pads moving freely. When they bind, one pad wears faster than its partner and the car can pull under braking.

Why brakes are different on an Audi

The electronic parking brake has to be put into service mode. On Audi models with an electronic parking brake, the rear caliper pistons are driven by motors. They have to be retracted with a diagnostic tool before the rear pads can come out, and reset afterward. Forcing them back by hand damages the motor.

Driver assistance leans on the brakes. Audi pre sense can pre-fill the brakes and apply them in an emergency, and adaptive cruise uses them in traffic. Healthy pads, rotors and fluid are part of what lets those systems do their job.

Performance models run bigger hardware. S and RS models carry larger rotors and multi-piston calipers, and some RS models can be ordered with carbon-ceramic brakes, which follow their own inspection and replacement rules. We check what your car has before quoting the work.

Electrified Audis wear their brakes differently. On e-tron and plug-in hybrid models, regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so pads last longer. The trade-off is that rotors see less use and can corrode, which is why they still need regular inspection.

What Sacramento-area driving does to your brakes

Stop-and-go on Elk Grove Boulevard and Laguna Boulevard is steady pad wear. The real test is elevation: coming down US-50 from Tahoe or I-80 over Donner, a heavy SUV like a Q7 or Q8 pushes a lot of heat into its brakes, and old fluid is what boils first. If you make that drive regularly, keep the brake fluid on schedule and have the pads checked before a winter of mountain trips, not after.

Valley summers add their own wear. Heat cycles harden pad compounds and bake the fluid, and a car that sits on hot pavement between short trips never lets the system settle.

Brakes, maintenance and offers

A brake inspection is part of the complimentary multi-point inspection Audi Elk Grove includes with every service visit, so if your car is due for regular maintenance, book that and we will measure the brakes while it is here. Brake fluid replacement is also on Audi's own schedule; see our Audi scheduled maintenance page for how those visits work.

Audi Brake Service: frequently asked questions

How do I know my Audi needs new brakes?

A brake pad wear warning on the dash, grinding, a pulsing pedal, a car that pulls under braking, or a soft pedal all mean it is time for an inspection. A red brake warning light means stop and call the service department.

How long do Audi brake pads last?

It depends on the model and how the car is driven. Heavy SUVs, performance models and stop-and-go driving wear pads faster, while e-tron and plug-in hybrid models often go much longer because regenerative braking does much of the work. The pad wear sensor tells you when they are near the end.

Do Audi rotors have to be replaced with the pads?

Not always. Rotors are measured at every brake service. If they are above Audi's minimum thickness and run true, they can stay. If they are below it or warped, they are replaced.

How often should Audi brake fluid be changed?

Audi sets brake fluid replacement on a time interval in the maintenance schedule, regardless of mileage, because the fluid absorbs moisture as it ages. Your service advisor can confirm when your car is due.

Can any shop do the rear brakes on my Audi?

Audi models with an electronic parking brake need the rear calipers retracted with a diagnostic tool before the pads can be changed. Doing it without that step can damage the parking brake motors.

Do e-tron models need brake service?

Yes. Regenerative braking reduces pad wear, but the rotors, calipers and brake fluid still need regular inspection, and lightly used rotors can corrode.

Is a brake inspection included with other service?

Audi Elk Grove includes a complimentary multi-point inspection with every service visit, and the brakes are part of it.

Are there brake service specials?

Service offers change through the year. Current offers are listed on the Audi Elk Grove service and parts specials page.
